Sundog Curriculum

At Sundog, outdoor adventure is the vehicle. Personal growth is the destination.

Every Sundog program is built around a socio-emotional learning curriculum designed to help young people develop the character, confidence, and resilience they need to thrive, not just outside, but in every area of their lives. We believe that the moments that challenge kids most, a tough climb, a long paddle, a moment of self-doubt on the trail, are also the moments that shape who they are becoming.

Our curriculum is anchored by one Essential Question, four Core Values, and a set of Learning Targets that guide every activity, debrief, and conversation across the program. Above all, every Sundog program is designed to deepen each participant's sense of belonging: to their group, to the natural world, and to the broader Midcoast community they call home.

Essential Question

HOW CAN I BE MY BEST SELF, AND BE AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY MEMBER, EVEN WHEN I FACE CHALLENGES?

Everything we do at Sundog circles back to this one central question. It is intentionally broad because there is no single right answer. Every participant's journey through a Sundog program is their own opportunity to begin answering it for themselves.

Core Values & Learning Targets

Our four Core Values are the character traits we aim to cultivate in every participant. For each value, two Learning Targets give kids concrete, accessible language for what that value looks and feels like in practice. Guides weave this language naturally into instruction and reflection throughout every session.

RESILIENCY

I can stick with a task, even when it is hard.

Even when I fail, I try again.

CONFIDENCE

I can believe in myself when trying something new.

I can feel success by working with others to achieve a goal.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

I can apply newly learned skills.

I take pride in myself and my actions.

INTEGRITY

I can make the right choice, even when no one else is watching.

I can take responsibility for my actions, good or bad.
